A bit of a different post today, I thought I would take the chance to talk a little bit about nature, the world around us and the important impact it has on our mental and physical wellbeing.

Bees play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our natural world. Without them, many plants, including those that produce the food we eat, would struggle to survive. World Bee Day, celebrated every year on May 20th, shines a spotlight on these tiny but mighty pollinators. This day encourages us to recognize the vital contributions bees make to ecosystems and human life, and to take action to protect them.

Why Bees Matter More Than You Think

Bees are responsible for pollinating about 75% of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we consume. This process supports biodiversity and helps plants reproduce. Without bees, many crops would fail, leading to food shortages and economic losses.

Pollination by bees also supports wild plants that provide habitats and food for other wildlife. This creates a ripple effect that sustains entire ecosystems. For example, forests rely on pollinated plants to grow, which in turn support animals like birds and mammals.

The Threats Facing Bees Today

Despite their importance, bee populations are declining worldwide. Several factors contribute to this alarming trend:

  • Pesticides: Chemicals used in farming can harm bees directly or weaken their immune systems.

  • Habitat Loss: Urban development and intensive agriculture reduce the natural areas where bees live and forage.

  • Climate Change: Changes in temperature and weather patterns disrupt bees’ life cycles and the availability of flowers.

  • Diseases and Parasites: Bees face threats from mites and infections that can devastate colonies.

These challenges make it harder for bees to survive and perform their pollination duties.

How does all this link to our day to day wellbeing?

When we become anxious our world starts to shrink, if this continues into the long term or develops into a mental health condition or illness, we find ourselves losing touch with the beauty of the wider world around us.

Taking a moment to notice the small things can have a huge impact on us day to day.

Watch a bee pick away at a flower or add a bee house to the garden and watching them work away at laying their eggs for the next generation of bees.

Notice the detail of the bee, how many different varieties can you spot, what is the difference between them? What flowers do they prefer?moment away from the anxious thoughts, a moment of connection with the world outside of our minds.

Acknowledge the impact of these mighty little beasts, bringing curiosity to the cycle of the food that is on our plates and how this can start from a bee flying from one plant to another.

These small actions can offer a moment of calm, ofcontemplation, and build our gratitude to the world around us . When we start to use bees as a focus, we can benefit not only from the impact they have on the natural world, but also the potential impact on bringing us glimmers of concentration and reflection.

Practical Ways to Help Bees Every Day

You don’t need to be a scientist or farmer to support bees. Here are some simple actions anyone can take:

  • Plant flowers that bloom at different times: This provides food for bees throughout the growing season.

  • Avoid pesticides in your garden: Choose natural pest control methods instead.

  • Create habitats: Leave patches of bare soil or dead wood where wild bees can nest.

  • Support local honey producers: Buying local honey encourages sustainable beekeeping.

  • Educate others: Share information about the importance of bees with friends and family.

Even small changes can make a big difference when many people get involved.

The Future of Bees Depends on Us

Bees face many challenges, but there is hope. Increased awareness and action can slow or reverse their decline. World Bee Day reminds us that bees are not just insects; they are essential partners in our environment.
