When Anxiety starts to take over

Anxiety in itself is a healthy part of being a human.  When it is working well it helps us to make decisions, hold our boundaries and stay safe.

For many of us, anxiety takes on more than this; it can feel like it increasingly is running the show in our lives.  If this is your experience, please be reassured you are not alone.

Understanding where your anxiety comes from

Anxiety is a natural reaction that we get from being under stress.  There is usually a combination of physical, psychological and environmental factors that create this response.

When anxiety starts to overwhelm us, or to rule our way of seeing the world there is often a reason behind it.  This individual to each person, examples include:

  • feeling out of kilter with the world you are living in;

  • unresolved trauma;

  • living or working in an environment of chronic stress.

What can anxiety look like?

Anxiety presents in many different ways, and may feel different on different days or at different times of your life.  You don't need to have a diagnosis to talk to someone about how you're feeling.

Examples of what it might feel like for you include:

  • racing or repetitive thoughts

  • constantly anticipating something going wrong

  • difficulty making decisions

  • feeling restless or unable to relax

  • difficulty sleeping

  • feeling tense or on edge

  • changes in appetite or digestion

  • a racing heart or feeling light-headed

  • avoiding situations because they feel overwhelming

  • needing reassurance from others

  • feeling exhausted from being “on alert”
